Colin Heaney was born on 17th January 1948, in Vancouver, Canada. At an early age his family moved to Southern California, where he discovered surfing. In 1966, Colin arrived in Sydney, Australia. After two years he decided to travel Australia and eventually moved to the then, small village of Byron Bay, on the subtropical far north coast of New South Wales, where he found multiple surfing breaks, and the beginnings of what has become one of the most sustained counter- culture communities in Australia.
In the early 1980's, Colin heard of the emergence of the Hot Glass movement in the U.S. With the invention of a furnace small enough to fit into an artists’ studio, artists could work the glass in their own studios. In 1982 his glassblowing studio was set up in the Byron Bay Arts Factory and relocated to the Byron Arts & industrial Estate where today it is one of the largest independent hot-glass art studio in Australia. A ‘must see’ destination for Byron Bay visitors, the studio is designed for visitors to experience the alchemy of hot glass blowing intimately.
Over 23 years, Colin’s pursuit of artistic and aesthetic excellence has resulted in glass designs that are of infinite variety. A prolific artist, he is hyper creative, colorful and multi-dimensional. Extremely inventive and constantly looking for new ways to explore his vision, he has worked primarily in 3D making sculptures and furniture, employing numerous techniques and media in metals, wood, stone, resins, cold glass, wax and found objects.
Colin’s philosophy on the creative process values paradoxes and the experience. Beginning with no end in mind, suspending judgment, juxtaposing and fusing things together is the creative process. Colin’s life embraces this philosophy.
Colin’s most recent exploration in digital art can also be viewed in the studio. Here, elements revered in his glass art leap onto the silk to create kaleidoscopic and vibrant images. Heaney’s limited edition luxury silk scarves are an exploration of art and technology. This unique range of silk scarves are beautiful hand finished pieces of wearable art in the most luxurious silks. These designs begin as photographs of Colin’s glass and his architechtural masterpiece ‘Casa Blu’. Colin then manipulates these images to create worlds of colour and patterns that are transformed into unique and stylish accesories.
Today, one of the world’s most celebrated glass artists, Colin is a maverick in the truest sense. His magnificent Hot Glass creations are featured in international private and corporate collections and include: News limited, Zurich Insurance, Telstra, and the Federal Airports Commission. Also featuring his technical mastery are the public collections of the Queensland Art Gallery, Majorca’s Glasws Museum, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark, and the Corning Museaum of Glass in New York. He is represented by Habatat Galleries – Boca Raton and Chicago and Gaffer Glass Gallery in Hong Kong.
